Regarding changes made to nested elements, some experimentation shows these things:

A) If a Nested Element is changed after it has been placed in another design (using Open Nested Element), those changes are saved and remain in place in the already-placed version of the Nested Element.

B) The changes do not back-propagate to the original nested element file.

C) If the "raw" nested element file is opened in isolation, changed and saved, all designs that use it (like the above example with the locally-saved changes made to the nested element) have the placed (and maybe edited) version of the nested design replaced with the new updated version of the raw nested element.

In practical use, that means never edit a Nested Element in place (using Open Nested Element) after it has been placed in a design, or you risk having those changes lost if any changes are subsequently saved to the raw Nested Element file and then you reopen the file containing the (edited) Nested Element.

All of what you said is true but only if "Nested initialization" property is set to "Load/Save local properties" which is the default.

The other 2 options behave differently, with "Load global and save" the changes you make do propagate to the original nested design. With "Load Global properties" nothing is saved except chart relative position.

Advanced Properties > Nested Initialization changed to Load Global and save. Restarted design and it had reverted to the default. Is this intentional?

Also, when set to Load Global and save then Opened and made changes, the changes didn't propagate to the source nested element.

Finally, when opened as Load Global and save and tried deleting a connection line the Opened Nested Element closed. The only real way to edit the source Nested Element was to Load it.

Editing a Nested Design in place is not working.

Nested Design Set to Local

-- Adding an element sometimes appears in the main element screen behind the open Nested Design
-- Can't connect pipes between elements

Only properties can be changed in place so it is not a full edit capability, no changes to connections or new elements.

The properties can be saved in the "Open Nested Design" dialog or from the design directly. The "Load Global and Save" option is sometimes used like a global variable between designs which load the same common nested design and need to keep track of changes between them.

To fully edit use the "Load Nested Design".
